SUMMARY: Catch bass from the bank of your pond or small lake by employing five essential steps, from understanding the basics and exploring the joys of bank fishing to packing the right gear, paying attention to details like clothing and ethical fishing practices, and continuously learning to improve your skills in catching bass.
Actually, this site is about a good bit more than learning how to catch bass. It’s all about enjoying and making the most of the experience.
Nice to meet you. We’re bank fishermen, those guys you see fishing along the bank of your neighborhood pond or public lake. We have no sponsors, no fancy boats, and no electronic fish finders (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Instead, we rely on our instincts and shared knowledge to catch more bass, all the while appreciating being in nature and the camaraderie of fellow bass anglers. We’re becoming better bass fishermen, together. And we’re glad you’re here.
This is our “How to Get Started” guide. Let’s get started!
STEP 1:
Learn the Basics
Before I start any new pursuit, the first thing I try to figure out is my “why.” You should do the same. Answering this key question can go a long way toward guiding you on your path. Do you want to do some “serious” fishing on a competitive level? Or does it feel like a fun hobby you might share with a friend or family member?
Your answers to these questions will guide you as you make some decisions including, “Where Can/Should I Fish?” “What Gear Do I Need?” and “Which Lures to Use?” You may also be wondering “What Else Do I Need to Know?” and “What Am I Overlooking?” In our beginners’ guide, we do our best to answer these and other questions.
STEP 2:
Consider Bank Fishing
If you’re new to fishing, you’d do yourself a big favor to give bank fishing a try, ideally at a pond or other small water near you.
Bank fishing is some of the most fun you can have. It’s easy, affordable, and accessible to anyone, with all the benefits of fishing without having to make a daylong event out of it. Bank fishing for bass is an excellent way to catch bass easily any day. It allows you to cover more ground, sneak into hard-to-reach places, and land a big bass that boats wouldn’t reach. What’s not to love?
STEP 3:
Carry the Essentials
When it comes to bass fishing, having the right gear is essential for a successful and enjoyable day on the water. If you’re fishing from the bank ― and God knows, here at Pond Fishing for Bass, we love fishing from the bank ― “essential” is the key word. You do not want to be carrying much crap you won’t be using.
To help you prepare for your next bass fishing trip, we’ve put together a bass fishing checklist of the essential items you’ll need — 10 items for if you’re fishing close to home, and 10 more you might find “essential” as you venture a little farther from home.
STEP 4:
Pay Attention to the Details
4A: What You Wear Matters
When it comes to fishing, choosing the right clothing can make all the difference. The choices you make when deciding what to wear fishing can ensure a comfortable and successful day on the water, but those choices can also help protect you from long-term and sometimes devastating effects of the sun.
The outdoors industry has stepped up its game in the past decade or two, providing shirts, pants, hats, and accessories designed to make your fishing trip better — and possibly EVEN HELP YOU CATCH FISH.
4B: Respect the Bass
Once you hook a bass and bring him to shore, what next? Some people will keep most of what they catch, sharing any excess with friends and family. Some will take only a few to eat and put back the rest. And some are catch-and-release devotees, for various reasons.
Where ever you fit on that spectrum, it’s important for ethical and other reasons that you know how to unhook and how to hold a bass properly to avoid unnecessary trauma and, if applicable to you, how to release the fish to ensure its survival. This also helps ensure the sustainability of bass fishing for future generations.
4C: Continue Learning
Fishing is a dynamic activity, and there’s always something new to learn. Read books, watch videos, and join fishing communities to gain insights from experienced anglers. Learning from others and sharing your own experiences will help you continuously improve your bass fishing skills.
